“You must have an amazing camera!”

People tell me this all the time and they’re correct – I do have an amazing camera (actually, I have three “amazing” cameras). And I have some beautiful photos. But does everyone need an amazing camera to take beautiful photos?

Many people ask me for camera recommendations to take better photos. My usual answer is “the best camera for the job is the one in your hands”. Do you need all the bells and whistles to get a great photo? In some cases, yes, but for most people, their iPhone is a great option.

Here are a few things you can do to take better photos with what you already have.

1. Read the Manual!
   Ok, you don’t have to actually read the manual but learning how to use your device/camera is key. Sure, you can just click on the button to take a photo but is there more? What about zooming? Do you use the Portrait mode on your iPhone? A quick search online (“how can I take better photos with my XX camera?”) is a great place to start.
2. Move In & Get Down!
   If you’re photographing your kids, get close and get low. You don’t want a ton of empty space around them – that includes the space above them. Get down on the ground, zoom in, and take the photo.
3. Look At Me!
   Most of the time, a photo is better when the subject is looking at the camera. And a smile isn’t always necessary – especially those scary “CHEEEEESSSE!” ones. Ask the subject a question before you click and wait for the pause once they’ve answered when their smile isn’t as forced. With kids, some of the most beautiful photos are the ones where they are telling you a story and their expressions are absolutely engaging.
4. Find the Light!
   Although camera/phone technology can make the light appear much more even, using the natural light on your subject is always better. Have them face the window/light so they’re not in the shadow. A flash can help sometimes but it’s not going to do a thing if you’re too far away from the subject.
5. Strike a Pose!
   Don’t just line up the kids and snap away. Have them squeeze in and then move in tight for the photo. When everyone is connected, the photo is better.
6. Turn the Camera Sideways!
   Don’t get stuck in one position – turn the camera 90 degrees and you might see something different.
7. Learn From Your Mistakes
   Look at your photos and try to see what went well and what went wrong. Use that information when you’re taking your next photo.
